About
Africa AIDS Watch
In
most parts of Africa, the child belongs to the community. In most
parts of Africa, the education and upkeep of a child is the mother's
responsibility only when the child is still in the womb. And in
most parts of Africa, good quality western education is the business
of the community. That's the resaon why most Africans, especially
the male child is expected to be his brother's keeper. At the
community level, therefore, it falls squarely on the shoulders
of the few Africans who have received western education to use
it effectively for the benefit of his larger society who predominantly
are poor. And who inspite their relative poverty have collectively
eked out a contribution towards the education of most of their
sons and daughters. It is against the background that, every African
Child is expected to give back to society what society had given
to him/her.
And
so, some time in June 1995, a group of concerned Africans studying
in the United States came up with an idea. That each year millions
of dollars worth of aids are distrubuted by kind hearted Americans
across the globe. That an insiginificant percentage of this aid
went to Africa in spite of the fact that Africa because of its
peculiar nature and situation needed more of these assistance
than others.
Aware
of the fact that each year, civil wars, natural catastrophes like
flooding, , tornadoes, landslides, mudslides, famine and disease
ravaged Africa and conscious that these phenomena have little
or no reportage in the world media, decided to interven.
First
we came to the conslusion that African tragedies have to be effectively
reported and covered in the western media and second, that it
was high time that Africans are taught to fish instead of the
provderbial fish being handed over to them at every call of a
tragedy. So we formed an organization called Lifeline Africa Foundation
Unfortunately
just as we thought we were effectively grapling with African problems,
the AIDS epidemic surfaced with ravaging intensity. Just as we
thought Africans could start being masters of their own destiny,
the
HIV - that deadly virus that causes AIDS - invaded the continent
with rapacious intensity never been seen since the era of the
Great Plague.
Now
Africans are dying in greater numbers never been seen. African
children are being orphaned at a proportion that could turn the
continent on its head. Africans in the age bracket of 24 to 45
are dying in the greatest of numbers. As we write the number of
those infected by the deadly virus is multiplying.
That's
why we took a decision some time last year to change the name
of our organization from Lifeline Africa to Africa AIDS Watch.
